The Australian Government has re-listed five terrorist organisations under the Criminal Code: Al-Shabaab, Hamas' Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades (Hamas' Brigades), Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton said the re-listings ensure that all terrorist organisation offences continue to apply to these organisations.

"It is vital that our counter-terrorism regime comprehensively targets activities which could harm our community – including associating with, being a member of, or training and recruiting for terrorist organisations," Mr Dutton said.

"Our security agencies have advised these terrorist organisations continue to meet the criteria to be listed for the purposes of the Criminal Code.

"Under the Criminal Code, there are a number of offences relating to involvement with these terrorist organisations, attracting penalties of up to 25 years imprisonment."

Mr Dutton said the Government was committed to ensuring counter terrorism legislation reflects the current threat environment.

"Our security agencies actively monitor developments around the globe to determine which organisations should be listed or remain listed as terrorist organisations," Mr Dutton said.
