South Australia Police have charged a man with murder and attempted murder in relation to the bombing of the National Crime Authority's (NCA) Adelaide office in March 1994.

The attack on a government building was an unprecedented act of domestic terrorism.

It took the life of West Australian Police officer Geoffrey Bowen after he opened a parcel bomb sent to the office and also seriously injured NCA lawyer Peter Wallis.

The arrest represents a significant milestone in what has been a comprehensive and challenging investigation by South Australia Police, most recently under Task Force Cornus, established in 2015.

The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton welcomed the news.

"I hope this significant arrest will give Detective Sergeant Bowen's family and Mr Wallis some comfort during the ongoing investigation into this senseless crime."

"I commend South Australia Police for the diligent work of its officers on Task Force Cornus in reaching this outcome."

The NCA was a predecessor to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.
