Alex Hawke was sworn in as Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs on 22 December 2020.
Alex was elected at the 2007 election as the Federal Member for Mitchell, an electorate centred on the Hills Shire in Northwest Sydney.
In September 2015, Alex was appointed as the Assistant Minister to the Treasurer. Following the 2016 Federal Election he was appointed Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection. After the establishment of the Home Affairs Portfolio, in late 2017 Alex was appointed Assistant Minister for Home Affairs. On 27 August 2018, he was officially sworn in as the Special Minister of State.
On 29 May 2019, he was sworn in as the Assistant Defence Minister and Minister for International Development and the Pacific. Previous Parliamentary positions which Alex has occupied include service as Member of the Speaker’s Panel and Committee roles as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters and Chair of the House Standing Committee on the Environment. Alex was also a member of the House Standing Committee on Education and Employment and the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
As well as serving as an Army Reserve Officer in the Royal Australian Armoured Corps from 1995 to 2000, Alex gained a Masters of Government and Public Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sydney University. Alex has a deep interest in Australian history, is a strong supporter of the Parramatta Eels and the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Raised in Sydney’s North Western suburbs, Alex, his wife Amelia and their sons, Jack, Lachlan, Thomas and Jonathan, reside in Mitchell.
