The Minister for Home Affairs the Hon Peter Dutton MP and the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs the Hon Alan Tudge MP, congratulate Eddie Woo who was named Australia's Local Hero at the 2018 Australian of the Year Awards.

The Department of Home Affairs proudly supports Australia's Local Hero Award in recognition of those working selflessly at a community level to make a real difference in the lives of their fellow citizens.

Mr Woo, a Mathematics teacher at Cherrybrook Technology High School founded 'Wootube' after posting tutorial videos online for a student with cancer who was unable to attend class.

"Mr Woo's infectious enthusiasm for the subject and a passion for helping others has given thousands of people an opportunity to further their education," Mr Dutton said.

"He has enriched many lives both in Australia and around the world and is a very deserving recipient of Australia's Local Hero Award".

Mr Woo is also a volunteer facilitator with the University of Sydney's Widening Participation and Outreach program and has motivated more than 1,400 students from disadvantaged backgrounds to further their education.

Mr Tudge congratulated the other state and territory finalists in the running for Australia's Local Hero Award.

"Each of the finalists have contributed positively to the community through their own unique way and have made the country a better place to live," Mr Tudge said.

"I'd like to thank every finalist for their commitment to their communities and our shared Australian values."
