The Coalition Government is closing yet another detention centre because of its success in stopping the boats.

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton said the Bladin Alternative Place of Detention (APOD) in Darwin will close on April 7.

"The site was opened by the Labor Government in June 2013 after the border failures which saw a massive blow out in illegal maritime arrivals (IMAs)," Mr Dutton said.

"The immigration detention network ballooned under the Labor Government and came at a significant cost. The closure of Bladin means that taxpayers save more than $18 million a year in lease costs alone.

"Bladin APOD is the eleventh detention facility that the Government has closed in just over a year and is in keeping with our election commitment.

"The Coalition Government's success in stopping illegal boat arrivals means detention facilities like Bladin can now be shut."

Should Labor ever return to government Bill Shorten will stop turn backs of illegal boats, abolish temporary protection visas and once again illegal boat arrivals will come in record numbers.

The IMAs currently accommodated at Bladin will be transferred to other sites or, if eligible, moved into the community or released on bridging visas.

Mr Dutton said that the Department will continue to liaise closely with key stakeholders and local suppliers who have had business arrangements with the Bladin facility.​
