The Australian Government is providing $450,000 in funding through the Safer Communities Fund to enhance security in and around the Sri Druga Hindu Temple in Deanside, Melbourne.
This funding has been awarded as part of $41.9 million being provided to successful grant applicants under round four of the Safer Communities Fund, to protect children facing risks associated with racial and religious intolerance.
Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, Jason Wood said the funding provided to community organisations like the Sri Durga Arts, Cultural and Education Centre is delivering on the Government’s priority of keeping Australians safe.
“The Government is committed to protecting all Australians from all forms of harassment and violence stemming from racial or religious intolerance, crime and anti-social behaviours,” Assistant Minister Wood said.
“Over the weekend I visited the the Sri Durga Hindu Temple.
“We all have the right to feel safe. This funding will help secure the Temple grounds so that the local Hindu community can feel safe from attacks, harassment and theft.”
The project will deliver secure fencing, alarm systems, CCTV cameras and bollards.
The Safer Communities Fund provides funding to community organisations, schools, pre-schools, and local councils to help implement and boost crime prevention and security initiatives such as CCTV and lighting. Grants of up to $1 million are available.
Applications are now open for round five of the Safer Communities Fund, with communities across Australia set to share in up to $55.1 million in grants to improve public safety and security.
