Congratulating Australia’s Local Hero 2020

The Hon Alan Tudge MP is currently acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs

On behalf of the Morrison Government, I congratulate Bernie Shakeshaft on being named Australia’s Local Hero at the 2020 Australian of the Year Awards.

Bernie has changed the lives of hundreds of children through the BackTrack Youth Works Program he founded in 2006.

His award-winning program helps young people reconnect with education and training, their families and their community.

Bernie’s tireless work and advocacy for young people is to be commended.

What better way to kick off Australia Day than by acknowledging someone who demonstrates so much of what is good about Australia.

Each of the Local Hero finalists are inspiring role models. They have each made exceptional contributions to their communities in their own unique way, making Australia a better place.

I commend and thank every finalist for their commitment to their communities and the hard work that has gone into their achievements.

I would also like to thank the Department of Home Affairs for again supporting the Local Hero category of the Australian of the Year Awards.

Further information on the 2020 Local Hero nominees and their individual contributions to the country can be found on the Australian of the Year website.
