Statement on Censure of Senator Fraser Anning

Today the Australian Senate rightly censured Senator Fraser Anning.

Following the Christchurch massacre, Senator Anning made disgraceful statements which sought to divide and to spread hatred and intolerance. Senator Anning blamed victims of the horrific attack and vilified people on the basis of their religion.

Senator Anning's views do not reflect those of the Australian community.

Australians recognise that our country is a much better place due to the diversity of our multicultural society. Our non-discriminatory immigration program welcomes people from all parts of the world regardless of their cultural background or religion. Australians of Islamic faith have made an immense contribution to our nation and are a critical part of our community.
