The Hon Peter Gutwein appointed Chair of the Australian Multicultural Council

The Australian Government is pleased to announce the appointment of the Hon Peter Gutwein as Chair of the Australian Multicultural Council.

The Australian Multicultural Council provides independent advice to the Australian Government on matters affecting Australia’s multicultural communities and supports efforts to strengthen social cohesion, inclusion and participation across our diverse society.

Mr Gutwein brings more than 20 years of leadership, governance and public policy experience to the role, including as the former Premier of Tasmania and Chair of the Migrant Resource Centre in Tasmania since 2022.

In 2024 Mr Gutwein led the Walk, Better Together walking over 330km to raise awareness that Australia’s community, economy and culture was and is strengthened by migrants and refugees, and highlighting the importance of cultural diversity and inclusion, with a clear message that we are better together. In 2025 Mr Gutwein was appointed as a member of the Australian Multicultural Council.

His demonstrated commitment to community engagement and collaboration will be a valuable asset to lead the Council as it continues its important work.

Mr Gutwein’s appointment as Chair will support the Council’s ongoing work to promote an inclusive Australia where people of all backgrounds are connected and feel a strong sense of belonging.

The Government congratulates Mr Gutwein on his appointment and looks forward to working with him as he leads the Council’s important work in advancing multiculturalism and strengthening social cohesion across Australia.

Mr Gutwein’s appointment takes effect from 20 July 2026.
