Ministerial Migration Roundtable – Communique

State and Territory Ministers from across Australia met in Melbourne on 28 June 2024 at the Ministerial Migration Roundtable, to advance cooperation on Australia’s migration planning and the migration reform agenda.

The Federal Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Hon Andrew Giles MP, chaired the Roundtable.

Minister Giles outlined measures in the Australian Government’s 2024–25 Budget, including ongoing investment to rebuild and reform Australia’s migration system.

Minister O’Neil and Minister Giles provided an update on commitments in the Migration Strategy that are helping to bring migration back down to sustainable levels. State and Territory Ministers recognised the increased planning levels for State and Territory Nominated and Regional categories within a smaller 2024–25 permanent Migration Program to support ongoing skills needs.

State and Territory Ministers discussed the Australian Government’s commitment to transition to a multi-year migration planning model over a four-year horizon and the role of State and Territory Migration Plans in effective national migration planning.

Minister Giles provided an update on the Australian Government’s consultation in relation to the Points Test Discussion Paper and thanked State and Territory Ministers for their submissions.

Minister O’Neil highlighted the release of the Regional Migration Discussion Paper for public consultation. State and Territory Ministers agreed to provide submissions on the discussion paper and welcomed the opportunity further engagement.

Ministers agreed to hold the next Ministerial Migration Roundtable meeting on 29 November 2024.
